aside from the tsim sha tsuis, causeway bays and dimsums, hong kong is a gloomy place. the carbon copies of gloominess eminate through its smog exterior. despite shops lining the boulevards, i couldn't ignore the brown, grey, black - colourless, buildings and atmosphere that surround it. also, perhaps i was too used to perth's smokefree air that i sneezed and teared at the slightest hint of smoke. its similarity to singapore, being a port city state, made me feel ever patriotic to our tiny nation. also, i felt a weeeee bit helpless that my mandarin was comme si comme ça.

we did the cultural hongkong, visiting lantau island for its big buddha at ngong ping. we did skyline hongkong, taking panoramic pictures of hongkong island and kowloon. we did touristic hongkong, at victoria peak, getting our chinese names carved into stamps (complete with red ink in those fancyschmancy porcelain cases), eating (fucken) many dimsums. naturally, we did the shopaholic routes as well, but in vain. hongkees are so small.

macau was a bit more interesting, with the 16th century portuguese architecture and churches, complete with mediterranean streets and squares. it was MUCH hotter there, which made me look for shade wherever possible. ahoy, tan lines.
