somewhere between reading my research on the Enlightenment and some articles on urban China and civil society, i started wondering if singaporeans are (or were) 'englightened'?

the older generation(s) believe our contemporary peers not having gone through much hardship, save for the times when we face an empty wallet, take too many things for granted. however, as much as i agree, this lack of suffering or hardship is no excuse for ignorance. yes - that dreadful disease on our protected four-walled little island.

to a certain extent, we are lucky to be a small island state - no major differences between spatial definitions of citizenship as such in China (rural vs. urban citizenship under the hu kou system), but this safety net has created a somewhat ironic unglobal city, despite increased mobility from globalisation. the world seemingly comes to the island, rather than the islanders venturing out. i don't merely mean physically, but mentally as well. minds seem confined within the walls. or the media.

earth to ignorance!

on a different (or maybe, similar?) note, pics from hanoi and ha long bay are up at you know where.
