the human need to classify could probably be said to have peaked during the period of enlightenment. characteristics, properties, tenets - synonyms of taxonomy; categorizing nature into groups, subgroups, branches. one of the counterarguments of the glory of enlightenment and scientific rationale would be racism (which then extends to colonialism). the classification of humans into subgroups, races, continents which validates the need to civilise "barbarians".
so in our tradition of classification, we have learnt to label everything we know of-from stages in life to relationships.
and when one cannot fit into any category, we create a new one. weird, strange, complicated which inevitably become part of mainstream classification culture due to its assimilation by society into everyday discourse.
we need to find a non-category.
