the past three days in wien have been extremely relaxed compared with italy - despite their rushrush and efficient atmosphere. perhaps that made me feel a bit more 'at home'.
wien is such a lovely city. filled with history everywhere, if the walls could speak, what stories! wide, clean boulevards and squares (platzen) lined with boutique shops, malls and bars (mariahilferstraße). classical music shops round the corner, baroque and gothic architecture, theatres and opera houses everywhere. the cafés are posh, yet affordable. indeed, observing the people and their lifestyle, plus manners, austria is such a proud (in a good way) country of its traditions - habsburg, titles, and history. although the general feeling is that of them trying to disassociate themselves with hitler. from the stephansdom to (the extremely yellow, thanks to empress maria theresa) shönbrunn to their traditional coffee/tea houses, wien is really a comfortable and beautiful city to live in. of course, knowing a local really makes things a lot easier.
thomas and i have been loading up on traditional wiener cuisine, namely lots of würst (sausage), schnitzel and sauerkraut, thanks to peter's suggestions and cooking. and boy are they filling!
peter, thomas and i head to münchen tomorrow morning!
