eh. despite subjectivity and individualism, a lot understanding (or perhaps lack of it) comes from cultural contexts. it really makes the difference between a full-hearted guffaw or a meak "eh heh" at one's joke. ok. throw in the doubt of a bad joke.

however, the beauty of conversation relies on individual and various personalities, humour and the essential body language - albeit the constraints of multiple levels of intelligence and interests.

then perhaps, it's not always the language barrier that is the scapegoat.
