i am ambivalent about the outcome of Saddam Hussein's trial. on one hand, it is a milestone that a country once under a despot can exercise tenets of democracy and citizenship rights, yet sentencing him to death by hanging seems to just create more sunni- shi'ite tension (a synedoche of broader religious fervour and confrontation) in an already war-striken nation.
furthermore the condoning of it by darling mr. bush and mr. howard seem rather hypocritical as they see themselves as liberators and advocates of democracy while applauding the end of a fellow human being's life. it seemingly reduces them to Hussein's level.
of course, it would also be unacceptable if Saddam Hussein ends up in a matyr-like fate similar to that of Slobodan Milošević who died of alleged food poisoning in his jail cell.
so again, we arrive back at square one.
on a happier and brighter note, if all goes according to plan, i'm off to amsterdam for six months next year!
